The River Bievres The River Bievres, located to the Southwest of Paris had been prone to flooding for many years, causing much damage to the town of Bièvers and the surrounding districts. In 1995 a telemetry scheme based on Panorama was installed to manage the 25 miles of river. The scheme consists of 100 telemetry RTU's based at 67 sites along the river. Each site monitors 30 water level guages, 11 rain guages and 6 pollution control stations. Each site also controls 20 valves, gates and pumps. The system operates these to fill natural lakes and ponds near to the river in order to prevent flooding.
The application relies on the data being logged and timestamped locally by the RTU's and published to the Panorama Servers when the RTU's are dialled up. The trends are then displayed seamlessly by the Panorama workstations. Any alarms detected by the RTU's, however, are published immediately to the Panorama system, again complete with a timestamp. The scheme operates contineously 24 hours per day, everyday of the year. It enables the emergency team to predict and control a surge of water, this preventing floods to populated areas with housing, businesses and farm land. The scheme also prevents businesses and farms polluting this popular river by gathering data to prosecute those that do. |
